Top 3 ways to promote your blog

It’s easy to start a blog with good intentions, but really getting the most out of it takes time and effort. You have to promote your content after creating it or it may well have underwhelming results.

Here are three ways to promote your blog effectively.

Pay per click advertising

Used effectively, PPC can go a long way to helping your blog build the momentum it needs to become a major force in its niche. In other words, it can vastly cut down the amount of time it takes to get those vital, early, engaged followers who will like and share and thus spread the word about how great your blog is.

Likewise, if you’ve been blogging for a while and are struggling to gain traction, PPC could get you out of the back row of the chorus and into the lead role.

Always test your ads so that you know you are getting the best out of the money you invest. Set a daily budget and divide it between two adverts (in theory you can split it between more but that risks muddying the waters). See which advert gets the better results, then withdraw the “loser” and replace it with an alternative to see what happens. Keep going in this way until either you have achieved your target or the approach ceases to be cost effective.

Search Engine Optimisation

SEO is a bit like tuning a car engine, it can make a huge difference. If you’ve already made sure that you’ve built a blog that offers both great content and excellent usability (e.g. intuitive navigation), then SEO could very well be the tool you need to bring your site steadily up the rankings.

Unlike PPC, which can bring in quick results, SEO is a long-term commitment, meaning that it could be weeks or even months before you start to see a noticeable difference.

Social Media (and Social Media Influencers)

The social media platforms have their own PPC options and, if you choose to use these, the same principles apply as those mentioned above for PPC associated with search engines such as Google.

Generally speaking, however, when people talk about promoting a blog through social media, they are talking about organic promotion. Given that social media can make a major difference to your search engine rankings, putting in some effort here can pay real dividends.

The first point to remember is that you want to make it as easy as possible for your visitors to help you with your promotion, so make sure that you include social media share buttons next to your blog posts.

At the same time, look for the places where potential followers are likely to be found and make a point of contributing valuable content to them. This is a good way to develop a relationship with key social media influencers in your niche, (ones who complement your offering rather than competing with it), which may bring about opportunities for using established influencers to promote your website and content.
